The W Trek is the most iconic multi-day hike in Patagonia and the best way to experience the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. Shaped like a "W", it links the park's greatest hits along three arms: the Grey Glacier, the French Valley and the base of the granite Towers. Strictly speaking, the route takes in two valleys — French (Francés) and Ascencio — plus the Grey arm, where the trail runs along the eastern shore of Lake Grey to the glacier. This guide, written by a Puerto Natales–based operator, covers everything you need to plan it.
The W Trek covers roughly 70–80 km over 4 to 5 days, with daily stages of about 15–22 km and 500–800 m of elevation gain. You sleep in refugios (basic mountain lodges) or campsites along the route. It's demanding but achievable for anyone with a good fitness level — no technical climbing required.
The W Trek (4–5 days) gives you the park's iconic highlights and busier, well-served trails. The O Circuit (7–9 days) is the full loop around the massif — wilder, more remote and less crowded, for experienced hikers with more time. If it's your first time and you want the highlights, the W is the answer.
Most hikers start by catamaran to Paine Grande and finish at the Towers. A typical route:
The W can be walked in either direction — east-to-west is equally popular. Prefer to end with the glacier by boat? See our W Trek with Grey Glacier navigation.
Accommodation inside the park is run by two concessionaires: Las Torres Patagonia (eastern sectors — Central, Chileno, Cuernos, Francés) and Vértice (western sectors — Paine Grande, Grey). Refugios sell out months in advance for the high season, and you must also reserve your park entrance ticket with CONAF. Booking the right beds in the right order is the trickiest part of the W — one reason many travelers choose an all-inclusive package.
The refugios and campsites for the classic W open from mid-September to mid-April, with peak season December–February (long daylight, warmest weather, but busiest). Shoulder months (October–November, March) mean fewer people and beautiful light. Patagonian weather is famously changeable — pack for four seasons in one day.
Self-guided gives freedom but you handle every reservation, transfer and meal yourself. A guided or all-inclusive W removes the logistics headache: park entrance, transfers, full-board lodging and a local guide who knows the trail, the weather windows and the best light. As a Puerto Natales operator, that's exactly what we do.
